Our elf has opened the lost sock desk. Two pairs have been reunited, but one blue sock is still waiting for news of its partner. 🧦

He looks very pleased with his new office. It is suspiciously similar to a little laundry basket.

This funny elf idea gives the children a tiny search mission and a chance to help the elf finish his morning’s work.

What you’ll need:

  • One official Elf on the Shelf doll (paid link)
  • Two pairs of clean socks and one extra pair
  • A small basket or box
  • A folded towel to support your elf
  • Paper and a pen for the desk sign

Setup:

Sit your elf in a small basket with a folded towel behind his back and his mittens resting near the rim. Lay out two matched pairs of clean socks in front of him. Add one sock from a third pair beside them, looking rather lonely. Tuck its matching partner just behind the towel inside the basket, with a little corner showing if you want an easy search. Put the “Lost sock desk” sign on the bench. In the morning, ask the children which sock still needs a partner and let them look around the elf’s little office. Once the missing sock is found, they can pair it up and declare the desk’s work complete. For a second round, mix the socks and challenge them to reunite all three pairs. Use the children’s own socks so the colours and patterns are familiar.

Use what you have:

Borrow a few clean socks from the laundry pile and return them after the game. A shoebox makes the desk if you have no basket, and a rolled tea towel supports your elf. You can use mismatched colours in the scene as long as the actual pairs are available for the children to find.

Try the North Pole laundry day or the Christmas memory tray for another elf scene.
