Our elf has found a little star with a very big shadow. He is rather pleased with his discovery. ⭐

The note says “Big star, little star”, and a pocket torch is helping with the explanation.

This easy elf idea prepares a small shadow experiment for the morning using one homemade shape.

What you’ll need:

Setup:

Cut your own simple star from opaque card and attach it to a folded paper stand so it stays upright. Rest the torch securely on a low block, aimed towards a plain wall. Place the star between the torch and wall, leaving space behind it for a shadow to form. Sit your supported elf to one side of the beam so he does not block it and add the “Big star, little star” note. Test the angles yourself, then leave the torch switched off overnight. Turn it on for the morning discovery; our photo shows that demonstration stage. With an adult, move the star nearer to the torch and then farther away, watching the shadow change size. Adjust the room light if you need the shape to show more clearly, and let the children suggest another outline to try.

Make it cheaply:

Use a torch already in the house and the back of a cereal box for the star. A heart or square works too, and a folded card flap can hold it upright. The interesting part is changing the distance, so there is no need for a special projector or a bought shadow-puppet kit.

Try the tiny stargazing telescope or the sock-puppet theatre for another elf scene.
