Our elf has kept a December diary. It is mostly happy memories, with a suspiciously small amount of space devoted to the mess he made. 📖

The last page says he is heading home.

This elf goodbye idea gives the children a little record of the month to unfold.

What you’ll need:

Setup:

Fold a long strip of paper backwards and forwards into four panels. Tape the first panel inside a small folded card cover labelled “My December diary”. Draw three memories from your own elf’s visit, then use the last panel for “Home tonight” or “Home tomorrow”, whichever fits your farewell day.

Sit your elf with his back supported and open the diary across his lap. Our example has baking, a snowy walk and Christmas lights, but your pictures should match your family’s December. Simple doodles will make it feel much more personal.

Read the diary together and ask the children which memory they would add. They can draw on the reverse before you close the book. Leave it behind as the elf’s farewell keepsake when he departs.

Make it cheaply:

Use an old envelope opened flat or strips of waste paper taped together. A cereal-box cover replaces bought card. The paper pack is useful for a colourful diary, but familiar memories and a handwritten goodbye are all you need.
