Our elf appears to think he’s a chicken. Even stranger, he’s claiming to have laid Christmas baubles! 🐔
He’s sitting in a paper nest with little wings and three shiny “eggs”. We don’t know who taught him about chickens, but a refresher might be in order.
This funny elf idea turns spare decorations into an absurd little scene. A homemade nest and a confident note do most of the work.
What you’ll need:
- One official Elf on the Shelf doll (paid link)
- A shallow basket or small round box
- Thin strips of brown paper for a nest
- Three lightweight plastic baubles
- White paper for two wings
- Tape
- A small folded cloth to support the elf
- Paper and a pen for the note
Setup:
Line the basket with a few strips of brown paper, keeping the centre open for your elf. Add a folded cloth behind him and sit him securely inside, letting his long soft legs rest over the front rim. Cut two simple feather-shaped wings from white paper and attach them lightly at his sides beneath the arms. Keep his face, collar and red hat clear. Put the baubles beside him in the nest, with their hanging caps visible so they are obviously Christmas decorations. Write “I laid Christmas eggs!” on the note and place it in front. The elf can look as proud as he likes; the very un-egg-like baubles are what makes his announcement funny.
Use what you have:
Use a small packaging box with rounded paper sides instead of a basket. Tear old brown wrapping into nest strips, or draw a nest on a flat card. If all the decorations are already on the tree, make three paper bauble circles and give each a drawn hanging loop. Simple paper wings are enough; there’s no need for a chicken costume.
Try the paper snowman puddle or the museum of very small things for another elf scene.
