Our elf is making a Christmas ribbon braid. He has three colours and a useful reminder: “Over to the middle.” 🎀

The top is held in place with tape, while three loose ends are waiting at the bottom.

This easy elf idea sets up a small plaiting activity with leftover ribbon.

What you’ll need:

Setup:

Line up the three ribbon ends and secure them together to the table with tape. Spread the loose lengths so you have a left, middle and right strand. Bring the left strand over the middle, then bring the right strand over the new middle. Continue alternating the outside strands, keeping them reasonably flat, until you have made a short braid. Leave the lower ends loose so the children can see all three colours. Sit your supported elf behind it with his mittens beside the taped end and add the “Over to the middle” note. In the morning, an adult can help the children finish a few more crossings, then secure the lower end. Their completed ribbon can decorate a gift, lie across a card or become a little garland for the elf’s corner.

Make it cheaply:

Use ribbons saved from presents rather than buying a new roll. Three soft yarn lengths work too, or try wide paper strips for a practice version that is easier to see. Different colours help everyone follow which strand moves into the middle, but matching colours still make a braid.

Try the Christmas paper weaving or the shoelace practice board for another elf scene.
