Our elf has been doing a little window decorating. He has made a window for the window. 🪟
His homemade frame has three coloured panes, ready for a look at the garden in a different shade.
This easy elf idea is a small craft with a lovely morning-light surprise.
What you’ll need:
- One official Elf on the Shelf doll (paid link)
- Scrap card and three pieces cut from Baker Ross coloured cellophane sheets (paid link), or saved transparent coloured wrapping
- Tape and a small “Look through!” note
- A broad, accessible windowsill or a table beside a window
Setup:
An adult can cut three small openings in a piece of card, leaving a sturdy border and strips between them. Tape transparent coloured sweet wrappers or cellophane over the openings on the back. Our version uses red, yellow and blue, but any see-through colours will work. Lean the finished frame against the real window glass on a broad sill, then sit your elf beside it with his back supported by the window frame. Keep everything away from the sill edge and use a table nearby if the window is awkward to reach. Add the “Look through!” note. In the morning, an adult can hold the little frame while the children look through each pane at the garden. Different wrappers may give faint or strong colours, so try yours against the light before making the display. The card can be decorated with paper stars afterwards.
Make it cheaply:
Save clean transparent wrappers from sweets or gift packaging and use a cereal packet for the frame. Ordinary opaque wrapping paper will not work as a pane, though it can decorate the border. If you have no transparent coloured material, leave the openings clear and let the children make a patterned frame instead.
Try the homemade paper lantern or the paper snowflake class for another elf scene.
