Easy elf idea – the spaghetti bridge

Our elf has become a bridge builder. Unfortunately, his chosen construction material is dinner! 🍝

A little spaghetti bridge stretches between two low books, with a toy car waiting at the entrance. He’s keeping one spare strand handy, which suggests confidence is still a work in progress.

This easy elf idea uses dry pasta and a few pieces of tape for a small still scene. It’s more of a pretend engineering project than a bridge that needs to carry traffic.

What you’ll need:

  • One official Elf on the Shelf doll (paid link)
  • A handful of dry spaghetti strands
  • Two thin closed books of similar height
  • Clear tape
  • A broad tray
  • One small toy car, such as a car from a Hot Wheels five-pack (paid link) (styles vary)
  • Paper and a pen for a “Pasta bridge” note
  • A low tin or box to support the elf

Setup:

Put the books on the tray with only a small gap between them. Tape a few strands together into each of two narrow, flat bundles, then lay the bundles across the gap with both ends resting securely on the books. Add short pasta crosspieces over the top to suggest a bridge deck. Park the toy car just before the bridge rather than making it balance on the pasta. Sit your elf beside the books against his support, with a spare strand near his mitten. Add the note and keep the whole arrangement low. A few visible tape joins make it look like a real homemade experiment. The car can wait patiently while the elf considers his next construction decision.

Make it cheaply:

Cut thin strips of scrap card and use those instead of pasta. Two small packaging boxes can replace the books, and a drawn car on a folded paper tab can wait at the entrance. Even one flat card bridge gets the idea across. There’s no need for a toy building set if you already have a few ordinary supplies.

Try the breakfast construction crew or the storybook domino run for another elf scene.
