Our elf has found a drawing board that finally fits on his lap. His first masterpiece is a staircase, and he is inviting everyone to have a go. ✏️

The “Tiny drawing challenge” note sounds simple. Those little knobs may make it more interesting than it looks.

This easy elf idea uses a working miniature Etch A Sketch for a quick, playful drawing challenge. A short line pattern is plenty for the morning discovery.

What you’ll need:

Setup:

Use the toy’s two knobs to make a simple stair-step line on the screen. Alternate a short sideways movement with a short upward movement so the whole drawing stays connected. Keep it uncomplicated: the tiny screen does not need a detailed Christmas picture. Sit your elf against a folded cloth and rest the toy on his knees, angled so the children can see the screen. Put the “Tiny drawing challenge” note beside him. In the morning, they can examine the pattern, clear the toy and try their own staircase with an adult. Start with a straight line, then a corner, before trying several steps. This is the World’s Smallest version of the classic toy, with real drawing controls, rather than a pretend miniature decoration. Let everyone compare their very wobbly staircases; the elf’s does not have to be the winner.

Make it cheaply:

Use a drawing toy you already have, even if it is much bigger than the elf. For a free pretend version, draw a red frame and a little staircase on scrap card, then leave paper and pencils for the children to copy the pattern. The cardboard version provides the challenge but does not erase or work like the real toy.

Try the tiny elf newspaper or the Christmas tree corner bookmark for another elf scene.
