This silly Christmas elf has been cracking jokes in the kitchen – literally! Sitting proudly beside a broken egg shell with a hand-drawn face, he’s left a note that says, “I told the egg a joke… it cracked up!” it’s one of those funny elf ideas that’s so simple to make but always gets a giggle.
The detail makes it great fun for kids: wash out an empty egg shell, draw on a face with a permanent marker, and pop a couple of gummy eggs or sweets in the middle as the “yolk.” it’s an easy, mess-free setup that works perfectly on the kitchen counter or breakfast table.
What you’ll need:
- One official Elf on the Shelf doll (paid link)
- One empty, washed egg shell
- A permanent marker you already have, or assorted Sharpie markers (paid link) for drawing a face on the empty shell
- A small note or printable saying “I told the egg a joke… it cracked up!”
- A couple of Haribo gummy egg sweets (paid link) or other sweets you already have
- Kitchen surface or plate for display
The card in the photo was from a Porky Penguin pack – I super recommend their elf ideas cards! See the Porky Penguin elf idea pack on Amazon (paid link).
Setup
Sit the elf beside the egg shell, with the note nearby and the sweets inside to look like egg yolks. It takes just a few minutes and makes a great idea when you’re short on time but still want something funny and creative.
