Our elf has signed up for surf school. He has the board, the wave and a very sensible sitting-down approach to his first lesson. 🏄

The sea looks suspiciously like a blue bath towel. Fortunately, this means there is no chance of getting his hat wet.

This funny elf idea turns an ordinary towel into a little beach scene. The cardboard board and the “Surf school” note do most of the storytelling.

What you’ll need:

  • One official Elf on the Shelf doll (paid link)
  • A blue bath towel and a little folded cloth
  • A piece of sturdy cardboard, roughly 30 cm long
  • White paper and a red pen or strip of paper
  • Paper for the surf-school sign

Setup:

Cut a long surfboard shape from the cardboard, with a rounded nose and a broad tail. Cover it with white paper and add a red stripe down the middle. Lay it flat on a low table, leaving enough room for the whole board. Roll the blue towel loosely, then curl one end over itself to suggest a breaking wave. Tuck the loose end underneath so it holds its shape. Sit your elf on the board with his red feet pointing towards the nose. A folded cloth behind his back helps him stay comfortably seated. Place the towel wave behind him and add the “Surf school” sign. He is a beginner learning on dry land, so there is no need to make him stand or balance on anything. A little paper sun is a nice extra if the December weather needs cheering up.

Use what you have:

A cereal-box panel works well for the board; double it up if it bends. Use any towel you have, even if your sea ends up green or stripy. You can draw the stripe directly onto the cardboard instead of covering it. The funny part is the very obvious towel wave behind your determined learner.

Try the fridge-door polar holiday or the indoor sled slope for another elf scene.
