Our elf has spotted a vacancy at the top of the Christmas tree. Well, he thinks there is a vacancy. The current star may have other ideas! ⭐
He has made his own gold backdrop and arrived for an audition. A little application note is waiting beside him, asking whether he has got the job.
This funny elf idea keeps the elf comfortably seated while he dreams of being the star. The homemade card prop does the storytelling, so there is no climbing involved.
What you’ll need:
- One official Elf on the Shelf doll (paid link)
- Plain craft card (paid link)
- Gold or yellow paper, or a yellow colouring pencil
- Scissors and a little tape
- A small stable chair or stack of books
- Paper for the application note
- Optional: A gold star costume for the elf (paid link) for a wearable version of the audition

Setup:
Draw a large five-point star on card and cut it out. Cover it with gold or yellow paper, or simply colour the card yellow. Tape the flat star to the back of a small chair or prop it behind a stack of books. Sit your elf in front with his normal hat and face clearly visible. The star is a backdrop, rather than an outfit. Place the scene near the Christmas tree and add “Can I be the star?” on a little note. You could leave a small tick box for the children to decide whether his application has been successful. Keep the elf at table height for the whole scene; he is only auditioning for the job.
For the bought-costume version, dress your elf in the gold star outfit instead of putting the card star behind him. Sit him securely at the base of the tree, with his back supported and both feet on the surface. Keep the voting note: the joke is still that he thinks he should be the tree topper. There is no need to balance him at the top of the tree.
Make it cheaply:
Use the back of a cereal box for the star and a yellow pencil to colour it. Scrap wrapping paper works too. If cutting out a large star feels fiddly, draw one on a sheet of paper and lean it behind your elf. A hopeful note beside the tree is enough for a very quick version.
Try the North Pole sparkle shop or the sock puppet theatre for another elf scene.
