All aboard! Our elf has borrowed the family’s shoes and opened a very unusual train service. 🚂
He’s sitting in the first trainer with a cardboard steering wheel, while a teddy and a rabbit have bagged the seats behind him. The destination board says “Next stop: Christmas!” We’re hoping nobody needs those shoes before the train leaves.
This funny Elf on the Shelf idea is a lovely quick setup for a tired evening. A few shoes and two toy passengers do most of the work, and children can spot whose footwear has joined the journey.
What you’ll need:
- One official Elf on the Shelf doll (paid link)
- Three clean shoes, trainers or slippers
- Two small soft toys or toy figures
- Paper or spare card for the signs; lightweight white card (paid link) works if you need some
- A cardboard circle for an optional steering wheel
Setup:
Line the shoes up toe to heel in a gentle curve, with enough room to see each passenger. Sit your elf in the heel of the first shoe and drape his legs over the side. Add a little cardboard steering wheel, resting it against his mittens. Pop a toy into each of the other shoes and stand the destination note beside the driver. You could add tiny tickets with the children’s names or make the last slipper the luggage carriage. Keep the train somewhere the morning shoe hunt won’t knock it over.
Make it cheaply:
Use the shoes and toys already in the house. A cereal-box offcut makes the wheel, and a torn piece of paper makes a perfectly good ticket. Even two slippers and one toy passenger are enough to get the joke across.
