Our elf is working at the supermarket checkout. Teddy has brought an orange, a banana and a shopping bag that may be slightly optimistic. 🛒

The fruit is nearly elf-sized, but he has already called “Next, please!”

This funny elf idea makes a little pretend shop from cardboard, with a paper conveyor belt and a toy customer ready to pay.

What you’ll need:

  • One official Elf on the Shelf doll (paid link)
  • Two small empty cardboard boxes
  • A strip of black craft card (paid link)
  • One orange and one banana, or toy fruit
  • A teddy and a small paper shopping bag
  • Scrap paper, a pen and tape
  • A folded cloth for support

Setup:

Use a long, low box as the checkout counter and tape a black paper strip along its top for a pretend conveyor belt. The strip stays still; it is just there to make the scene easy to recognise. Make a small till from a second box, drawing a few buttons on a paper panel. Add a narrow scrap-paper receipt and sit your supported elf behind the counter. Put the orange and banana on the belt, then seat Teddy opposite with his tiny shopping bag. Leave a “Next, please” note in front. In the morning, the children can help Teddy count his two purchases, choose pretend prices or draw another receipt. You could make each item cost one paper coin to keep the game simple. The fruit can return to the fruit bowl afterwards, so the shop does not need a basket full of new supplies.

Make it cheaply:

Use packaging boxes and the dark side of an old magazine for the belt. Toy food works if you have it, or draw groceries on small pieces of card. A folded-paper bag is enough for Teddy’s shopping. You can also use an existing toy till, but the homemade counter gives the whole joke without buying one.

Try the snack vending machine or the breakfast café for another elf scene.
