Our elf has been redecorating the Christmas tree. We were thinking baubles and stars; he has gone for socks! 🧦
A few colourful odd socks are hanging from the little tree, while the usual baubles sit in a basket below. His note says “New decorations!”, so this was clearly a deliberate design choice.
This naughty elf idea is a small decoration prank using clean socks. A miniature tree keeps the setup quick, but one low branch on your main tree works too.
What you’ll need:
- One official Elf on the Shelf doll (paid link)
- A small Christmas tree or a few accessible branches
- A few clean, lightweight odd socks
- Optional short loops of cotton string
- A basket or bowl for any decorations you move
- A small support for the elf
- Paper and a pen for his proud note
Setup:
Choose a few light socks with cheerful colours or patterns. Rest each cuff loosely over a branch or use a short cotton loop to hang it, keeping the sock supported so it does not pull the branch down. Move just a couple of ordinary decorations into the basket to make the swap clear. Leave the rest of the tree as it is. Sit your elf at the base against the pot or a low support, with his face turned towards the room. Add his “New decorations!” note beside the basket. You don’t need a full tree of socks; a handful makes the joke easy to spot. When the children discover his handiwork, they can judge the unusual decorations and help put the baubles back.
Use what you have:
Use a twig arrangement in a pot or draw a Christmas tree on a large piece of card. Drape one clean sock over the display and sit the elf below it. A cereal bowl can hold a bauble. If there are no spare socks, cut a few sock shapes from packaging and colour them in for his pretend collection.
Try the silly pantry labels or the giant paper moustache for another elf scene.
