Our elf is looking remarkably innocent. There is a whoopee cushion in front of him and a note asking “Who was that?” 💨
He has not waited to find out whether his joke will work. He has already made himself comfortable.
This funny elf idea sets up a quick noisy surprise for the morning, without making a mess.
What you’ll need:
- One official Elf on the Shelf doll (paid link)
- An assorted-colour whoopee cushion (paid link)
- A sofa cushion or comfortable display spot
- A small piece of paper and a pen
Setup:
Inflate the whoopee cushion as directed on its packet and test it before arranging the scene. Place it flat on the sofa, with the inflation neck left clear, and recline your elf against a fold in the sofa cushion behind it. Add the “Who was that?” note where the children will spot it. Keep the prop visible so everyone can enjoy the joke together. In the morning, an adult can press it with a hand to produce the surprise sound, then invite the children to decide whether the elf or Teddy is responsible. The lightweight elf will not necessarily make it sound by himself. This listing shows assorted colours, so the cushion you receive may differ from the pink one in our scene. Follow the product’s age guidance when letting children use it.
Make it cheaply:
Skip the cushion and make a pretend sound-effect button from a circle of card. Write “Press for a silly noise” on it, then have an adult supply a ridiculous raspberry when someone presses it. The elf’s innocent face still does most of the work, and there is nothing to buy.
Try the Christmas joke club or the enormous glasses disguise for another elf scene.
