Our elf has got his holidays in a muddle. The Christmas tree is up, but he’s started preparing for Easter! 🐰
A basket of pastel eggs and some rabbit ears are waiting beside him. His “Wrong month!” note suggests he’s finally noticed that something isn’t quite right.
This funny Christmas elf idea is an easy mix-up scene using paper props. The Christmas decorations in the background make his mistake obvious.
What you’ll need:
- One official Elf on the Shelf doll (paid link)
- A small basket or shallow box
- Three egg-shaped paper cutouts
- Pens or coloured craft paper (paid link)
- Scrap card for a rabbit-ear headband
- Tape
- Paper for the note
- A Christmas decoration or small tree nearby
Setup:
Cut three large egg shapes from paper and add simple spots or stripes. Fold a little tab at the bottom of each so they can stand at different angles in the basket. Make a plain paper band with two long rabbit ears and leave it beside the eggs. Sit your elf against the basket with his usual red hat and face clearly visible. Put the note at the front and include a Christmas tree, stocking or other familiar decoration behind him. You don’t have to dress him as a rabbit: the misplaced ears tell the story on their own. In the morning, the children can explain which holiday he should actually be getting ready for.
Make it cheaply:
Use the back of packaging for every prop and colour the egg shapes with ordinary pencils. The basket can be a folded paper tray or a clean container lid. You can draw the ears on one flat card if making a headband takes too long. There’s no need to buy Easter sweets or accessories for a scene that’s deliberately in the wrong season.
Try the fridge-door polar holiday or the paper snowman puddle for another elf scene.
